Psy-chotic Style

Surely one of the leading contenders for Man of the Year is.... I'm not talking about Thein Sein, Barack Obama or Justin Bieber.... but South Korean horsing sensation Psy. In an era where K-pop has dominated the world, with 4pm, 2am or whatever-fish pm ruling the airwaves, there has arrived a rather-fat, unpretentious and charming mid-level celebrity to top them all.

Let's make it clear: it's a brilliant song and a fantastic video. Although I don't give a horse-shit to all the lousy and hopelessly fake other Korean bands, I took one proper listen to 'Gangnam Style' and fell in love with it instantly. What's more, watching the video led me to adore the song even more. It's such a stylistically slick production, with brilliant plot and action sequences; just a brilliant MTV video. I proceeded to download to my iPod no less than 5 versions of the song (including one by the Glee cast). When Simon Cowell says 'you're brilliant' (as he did in an Ellen DeGeneres episode when Psy taught a mildly-stunned Britney Spears how to do the horse-dance), that means you are brilliant.

The town of Gangnam has also gone ga-ga about their native megastar, and has recently constructed a dedicated monument, complete with a massive 'Gangnam Style' headboard and placards of Psy doing his famous dance. The town is going all-crazy visiting the moument and taking photographs, and in fact is planning a further holoscopic feature of laser-lights illuminating a Psy figure. Through the popularity of the song, they hope to draw even more tourism to their affluent city, which is chock-full of fancy sports cars and spectacular restaurants, and of which many compare to US' Beverly Hills area. In Singapore, the equivalent would be Bukit Timah I guess. :-)
