The Drama Kings

My God. Yet again, Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal manage to make heavy work of light opposition in the qualifying competitions of major football events. One more for the road, then, as Paulo Bento's highly-talented squad contrived to fall behind 3-1 to group competitiors Israel in Tel Aviv (after taking a 2nd minute lead), before coming back in the 93rd minute to secure a 3-3 draw. Very typical Portugal.

With probably their most powerful starting elevn featuring luminaries such as Ronaldo, Pepe, Miguel Veloso, Raul Meireles and Helder Postiga, Portugal went ahead through rugged centre-back Bruno Alves. They were then hit by an Israel avalanche of three successive goals, with Tomer Hemed, Eden Ben Basat and Null Gershon scoring to put the home team 3-1 up after 70 minutes.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who till then had been having a relatively quiet game by his standards, got into the action and created Postiga's goal in the 72nd minute to make it 3-2. Just when Israel looked set to hang on for a vital and historic win, up popped Ronaldo's Real Madrid team-mate Fabio Coentrao (a left-back I rate very highly) to score the equaliser and break Israeli hearts.
