Killer Stuff

The Killers are an influential, charismatic band formed in Las Vegas, Nevada back in 2001. To be honest, when they first came out; I didn't think too much of them; they seemed a rather superficial, inconsequential rock band-sounding wannabe with a pseudo-sounding cool name that didn't fit them. Their popular debut single 'Mr Brightside' didn't cut much ice with me too.

But as they grew into their own, it was with their 2006 album 'Sam's Town' that struck a chord with me. Hit after hit started to roll off the charts: notably 'Read My Mind' & 'When You Were Young' that symbolized their unique, lasting brand of pop-rock; backed by tantalising melodies and Brandon Flowers' soaring, charming voice. Even better was their 2007 collaboration with Lou Reed called 'Tranquilize' - a song with a tune as unique as you could want and which fitted The Killers' kookiness and quirkiness to a Tee.

You would have thought that was their peak; but they surpassed it with the brilliant song 'Human' from their next album 'Day & Age'. To this day, it remains one of my favourites with its ultra-catchy melody and supreme, dance-able feel. And of course the immortal line 'Are we Human... or are we Dancer'... Other good songs from that album were 'Losing Touch' & 'Neon Tiger'; as the band were settling now very comfortably into their groove.

With The Killers now well-impressing in my head, I looked forward to Flowers' solo delivery; and not surprisingly came away suitably impressed. He had three big songs - 'Only The Young'; 'Hard Enough' & 'Crossfire'; songs which carried on The Killers' tradition of mesmerising, captivating pop-rock.
