I am not a U2 fan. But I do understand the meaning of the word 'seminal'. And if there is such a thing that can define the word 'seminal'; it would be 'The Joshua Tree' album by U2. I mean; when that album came out; it was like the whole world noticed. The impact of that album was just so tremendous... I can still kind of imagine it till this day. I mean U2 was already a big band before that; but it was that album that catapulted them into the big time. There was no stopping them from that moment onwards.
After that was of course Rattle & Hum and Achtung Baby! And the hits and global success continued for them. I think only around 1993 they kind of slowed down... with the album Zooropa already signifying a somewhat decline for them. When 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb' came out; they were far from their glory years... but still a legendary mainstay of course.
U2 is playing in Singapore this weekend; and never have I seen The Straits Times post 2 full pages of the band in all its glory; from the stage definitions to equipment to albums and all. Good stuff. You don't get many bands as big as U2. Maybe Michael Jackson; Bon Jovi or Madonna. Anyways, I do have a few of their songs on my iPod; but strangely they tend to be the later ones like 'Walk On'; 'Miracle Drug' and 'Original Of The Species'. I always found their early music abit monotonous for me haha.
