The Comeback Boys

Geylang International met the Young Lions; with both teams looking to come back from devastating 4-goal defeats in the opening round. And it was Geylang who got the better of Nazri Nasir's young side with a comprehensive performance; with the 'comeback boys' Iqbal Hussein & Khairul Nizam getting on the scoresheet. Iqbal in particular was outstanding on the right flank; cutting in as an inverted winger and causing problems for the Lions defence all night. He also finished expertly from a direct free-kick and a sharp penalty-area grounder after some slack Lions defending. Christopher Van Huizen was also brilliant for the home side; with his industry & attacking verve down the left flank really catching the eye.

For the Young Lions; it was a case of being too naive all-round; conceding too many unnecessary fouls; and failing to take their chances. Rezza Rezky had a great chance when put through but finished tamely; and in an amazing corner sequence; they had no less than five attempts to score but ultimately came up empty. They did make history in the 63rd minute though: as 15-year old Khairin Nadim came on to become the youngest player ever in the SPL.
