The Baines There Was; The Baines There Is; The Baines There Ever Will Be

Everton has had a long history of good left-backs: from the 1985 vintage edition of the 'original Psycho' Pat Ven Den Hauwe; to the talented Michael Ball; corner-specialist Andy Hinchcliffe; hardworking Gary Naysmith; flamboyant Portuguese international Nuno Valente; and even to the current ex-Barcelona standout Lucas Digne.

But probably the greatest Everton left-back of all-time has to be Leighton Baines. For years and years; we could scarcely believe our luck how we got this former Wigan Athletic standout and who seemed to become the best left-back in the world. Time and time again we breathed effusively as he delivered game after game; cross after cross to bamboozle the world and take Everton to greater heights. With him & Seamus Coleman on the other flank; Everton were primed to have two of the best full-backs in the world.

Perhaps his finest moment came in a thrilling game against West Ham United when he scored not one; but two majestic free-kicks to win the game for Everton; one put in each corner for good measure; proving his offensive capabilities could match his defensive ones.

He formed a supreme partnership down the left with Steven Pienaar; some called the best in Europe or even the world; as their telepathic understanding seemed to defy the laws of nature and bamboozle the opposition; stunning fans & purists alike.

The last few seasons have seen a natural regression; as he almost suddenly became a 'nobody' and relinquished his place to the young and aspiring Digne. However; as he retires from professional football; his accomplishments and displays will live long in the memory. He also earned about 30 caps for England; as his club form was rightfully recognised on the international stage.
