Don't Cry For Him Argentina

Argentina begin their World Cup 2022 qualification campaign today; with a tricky-looking tie at home to Equador. Their squad chosen by young manager Lionel Scaloni is pretty interesting; with some young players mixed with more seasoned veterans such as mega-star Lionel Messi; who at 33; may well be looking at the next World Cup as the final chance for him to win the ultimate prize.

He has come close before of course; most notably in 2014 when a tear-stricken Messi was running away in celebration after his team had beaten the Netherlands on penalties in that unforgettable semi-final. Just like in 1990 though; that Germany team proved too difficult to crack; and in the end just about edged it 1-0 in the final thanks to an extra-time goal from Mario Gotze.

Undisputably the greatest player in the world; Messi has won six Ballon d'Ors; a whole host of club prizes with Barcelona; and goal-scoring records anyone can ever imagine. But he has yet to win the ultimate prize. Unlike of course; the legendary Diego Maradona; who almost single-handedly powered his 1986 team to the ultimate glory in the Mexico World Cup. Could this coming World Cup finally be the one for Messi?
