Bluewings Take Flight

An intriguing AFC Champions League Round-of-16 match ended with Korean side Suwon Samsung Bluewings stunning Japanese favourites Yokohama F. Marinos 3-2 at the beautiful Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar.

True to form; the Japanese side came out blazing; playing their quick-passing; expansive football to get a stranglehold on the contest. They took the lead in the 20th minute through core striker Erik Lima; after a great pass from captain Takuya Kida released the impressive Teruhito Nakagawa down the right; who then crossed brilliantly for Lima to stab home.

The Japanese side could in fact have been 4-0 up at half-time; such was their dominance; having missed further good chances through Nakagawa & the precocious Marcos Junior. In the second half; you could tell that the Korean side were still hoping for a comeback; having been down only 1-0; and slowly & surely; they started to gain back control of the match.

Yokohama were in fact guilty of making some mistakes; notably from defensive players Takahiro Ogihara & Shinnosuke Hatanaka; allowing Suwon to stage an incredible comeback & lead 3-1 with goals from Kim Tae Hwan; Kim Min Woo & Han Seok Jong. Yokohama managed to pull one back right at the death from substitute Ado Onaiwu; but it was too little too late.
