It was Tottenham who got off to the better start; with Erik Lamela forcing a good reaction save from Robin Olsen early in the game; before Davinson Sanchez really put the visitors ahead with a header from Son Heung-Min's left-wing corner.
It looked like Tottenham were having control of the game; but a wild 10-minute sequence late in the first half saw Everton gain dramatic control; with Dominic Calvert-Lewin's fierce volley; Richarlison's accurate grounder & Gylfi Sigurdsson's cool penalty taking Everton into a scarcely-believable 3-1 lead.
It looked like they were going to dominate the game; but the tide somewhat turned again when a mistake by Yerry Mina allowed Lamela to chip over Olsen in first-half injury-time after a clever one-two with Son.
Spurs then completed the dramatic equaliser when Everton; struggling with corners all night long; allowed Toby Alderweireld to flick a header that was pushed out by Olsen; only to fall to Sanchez again for the equaliser to make it 3-3.
It looked like Spurs were wresting back control of the game; but Richarlison popped up on the left plank to drill home a precise finish with his left-foot; off the post to put Everton up 4-3 in this remarkable contest. You just had a feeling things were not done yet; and sure enough with just seven minutes left on the clock; it was substitute Harry Kane who powered in a diving header from point-blank range; after good work on the left from his partner-in-crime Son; after yet another Spurs corner.
On to extra-time it went; with both sides still showing good energy levels in this absorbing contest. It was Everton substitute Bernard who produced the ultimate breakthrough; latching on to Sigurdsson's inventive left-foot chip to get behind the defence and drill home with his left-foot to secure Everton the ultimate victory.
