The football world was up in arms over the stunning news that the Saudi-backed Public Investment Fund (PIF) has taken over Newcastle United. This smells of the 2003 takeover of Chelsea by Roman Abramovich; when they took over the world; started buying Hernan Crespo; Claude Makelele & Adrian Mutu; and life was never the same.
The long-suffering Newcastle fans; amongst the best-supported clubs in the world; are understandably jubilant; having woken up to the news that their team may now be joining the likes of Manchester CIty & Paris Saint-Germain at football's big table. Which new signings will they sign; and how long more before they win the Premier League.
There are also signs that with this new takeover; they may want a higher profile manager than lifelong Geordie Steve Bruce; with names such as Antonio Conte being bandied about. With the club now sitting in 19th place & winless in the Premier League; this is indeed a chance for them to overturn their fortunes and rise from the doldrums.
