From Andrei Shevchenko; to Fernando Torres; to Alvaro Morata; it seems the burden of the star striker at Chelsea has proven too much to bear. When they bought Shevchenko in 2006; the whole world trembled with fear as he was the best striker in the world; having dominated the plaudits at AC Milan. However; after only 9 Premier League goals in 47 appearances; it was perhaps the greatest flop in world football history.
Ditto Torres who came from Liverpool in an Earth-shattering 50 million pound transfer; who had set the Premiership alight and would take Chelsea to the promised land. After an underwhelming 20 goals in 110 appearances; he soon faded into oblivion after that. Morata came with an equally big reputation from Real Madrid but never looked quite comfortable in a Chelsea shirt.
Me thinks the combination of a few factors has led to this conundrum. It could be the heavy burden of a massive price tag and playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world in Chelsea; thus finding it hard to deliver. It could also be the fact that Chelsea are a team traditionally built on defence & tenacity; thus not quite playing to the striker's strengths. It could also be a problem of not settling down well in London; due to the change in culture & lifestyle.
