Just when it seemed Frank Lampard & his men were losing the plot; they came up with one of their best performances of the season; showing the typical Everton grit and drive in front of a vociferous home crowd; who greeted every tackle and turn with a sumptuous roar of approval.
It also highlighted Anthony Gordon's ascent to fame this season. From a bit-part player who was showing just flashes of form; the young academy prospect has taken it up a notch this season; showing more maturity and enthusiasm as he has stood out among Everton woes this season. His energetic display and shot on the move deflected off a beleaguered Man United captain Harry Maguire; whose form this season has continued its plummacy with another inept display.
As much as Everton's win was attributed to their drive & energy; it also highlighted another shambolic United display; one typical of their rather inconsistent season. Their team showed a glaring lack of creativity & drive; and the team don't particularly look like they enjoy playing with one another. I think the untenable situation of Ralf Rangnick being interim manager is paying its price; the team don't look particularly eager to impress amid all the speculation of who the next permanent manager will be.
Marcus Rashford; albeit having two good chances early on; seemed to fade into oblivion later in the game and was substituted; not for the first time this season. When Paul Pogba came on; he was as usual playing in the wrong position as a No. 6 instead of No. 8; and wasn't able to deliver his usual spark. Even Cristiano Ronaldo was devoid of service upfront and was largely unable to influence the game; with his frustrating afternoon summed up with a late injury and ugly spat with an Everton fan down the tunnel.
