The Hammers have proved a solid outfit throughout the season; especially at home; where they have already stunned championship contenders Liverpool 3-2 in an earlier outing. And they threatened to do it again; with in-form winger Jarrod Bowen twice beating City's offside trap to put them 2-0 up in a rather surreal setting. Oleksandr Zinchenko could well have been at fault for both goals; but City's rather-makeshift defence of Fernandinho alongside Aymeric Laporte also seemed ill at ease.
It almost seemed no way back for City; but in a second half that proved their resilience and fortitude; Jack Grealish struck with an early volley; before a calamitous own goal from Czech star Vladimir Coufal levelled things up. It almost looked like City would reach the heavens when Gabriel Jesus was brought down by Craig Dawson; however, Mahrez's penalty was brilliantly saved by Lukasz Fabianski to leave the title race in the balance.
They can still wrap it up with a victory at home to Aston Villa on the final day; but for now at least; the title decider will come down to the final day.
