The Great Wide Open

The women's tennis game has never had it this good. In an era when there are seemingly new Grand Slam champions every round; where upsets galore happen and everyone is seemingly on a par; it does live up to the adage that truly: everyone can beat everyone else.

It was probably around 6 years ago that this phenomenon started to take place; and gone were the eras of Steffi Graf & Serena Williams where a single lady dominated. Grand Slam champions such as Bianca Andreescu; who seemed set to be the next big thing; could not handle the new-found stardom; and before too long; they had disappeared into nothingness. The same could be said of Naomi Osaka; who had a very public falling-out; and recently Emma Raducanu; who was the first qualifier ever to win a Grand Slam; but unsurprisingly has hit a huge slump in form; losing almost every match.

The currently ongoing French Open is another clear case in point. Unknown 19 year-old Diane Parry of France stunned the world by upsetting defending champion & 2nd seed Barbora Krejkicova in the first round; and she was not alone. Like some joke circus come true; the top seeds were left biting the dust everywhere in the opening rounds; with in-form Tunisian Ons Jabeur; Grand Slam stalwart Garbine Muguruza and even muscle-bound Maria Sakkari all heading for an early exit.

The best thing is that every Grand Slam; there is almost always a new winner; thus proving that the field is indeed level all over; and you're never quite what's going to happen next. It's fantastic to watch.
