The latest movie blockbuster is 'Back To The Past'; a Hong Kong sequel to the seminal 2001 series 'Step Into The Past'; a science-fiction inspired trip back to the Qin Dynasty for a modern policeman. Kind of like an antithesis to Back To The Future; the film brings back the sterling cast of Louis Koo; Raymond Lam; Jessica Hsuan and others; thus ensuring its nostalgic appeal back to the good old days.
With its strategic premise; you get a sense that this film could have been more. But with a good dose of humor; a relatively fast-moving story-line and its nostalgic cast; this makes it just about a hit. However; its strength is also ultimately its failure. By relying on the sequel method and bringing back all the old stars; it more or less makes it a sure-fire hit. But that is exactly the problem it is trying to overcome. Honk Kong shows nowadays are more or less showing the same stars in every show such as Bosco Wong & Charmaine Sheh; and there is just not enough new talent recognized enough to make a breakthrough.
