Unfortunately, this song by Duran Duran came into my head lol... What can I say? We battled the champions Man City really hard... tooth & nail... tight & close contest... but in the end came up empty to lose 3-1 at home to Josep Guardiola's side...
The starting was pretty even... but when Kevin de Bruyne swung over one of his laser-beam crosses, it had an air of eerie deja vu about it... that brilliant striker Gabriel Jesus dove in to head City in front... it all seemed rather inevitable about it... but lo and behold... within 10 minutes, Everton had got back level; with the brilliant Seamus Coleman chipping brilliantly over Ederson for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to head home at the goal-line.
After that, Everton conjured up a mighty performance, reveling behind a whole-hearted Goodison faithful as the champions started to panic... sensing the match slipping away; with Morgan Schneiderlin's rather wild lunge on de Bruyne nearly bringing things to a head. Everton had good chances too... with 6'5" Colombian international Yerry Mina thrice heading on target from corners; only for Ederson to expertly foil him on each occasion.
Riyad Mahrez was on fire in this game... looking threatening with every move down the right... and it was him who restored City's lead with a lovely free-kick that nonetheless should have been better dealt with by England No. 1 Jordan Pickford... the feeling is that our friend Pickford is taking both his club and country starting position rather for granted; and his performances so far this term have hardly been awe-inspiring.
With Everton now slightly demoralised, it was left to Raheem Sterling to volley home on his left-foot a shot that crashed off the underside of the crossbar and over the line... making amends for an earlier miss when he was put clean through one-on-one by that man Mahrez again.
