After Everton's stirring 2-0 victory over West Ham United at Goodison Park last week; an air of anticipation had stirred up among the Everton faithful... could they sustain this awesome form away from home in a tough match-up at Brighton & Hove Albion?
Unfortunately, they couldn't quite replicate the intensity they showed at home a week earlier; as Pascal Gross fired the home side with a direct free-kick that England No. 1 Jordan Pickford should really have done better with. It was yet another goal Everton have conceded from a set-piece... the highest in the league this season.
Having said that, Everton did come back strong; with Richarlison forcing an Adam Webster own goal from a Lucas Digne corner... and as both sides tried manfully to out-manoeuvre each other, it became a Propper contest; with the visitors probably slightly edging it...
The second half was more of the same; with the visitors again slightly edging it in a close contest. The breakthrough seemed to have come when substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin latched on to a lovely through ball from Mason Holgate; before sharply slotting past the on-rushing Mat Ryan. This knock-out punch seemed to have the game won... but it was not to be; as VAR somehow gave a very soft penalty against Michael Keane on Aaron Connolly... it may have been a step; but it was so accidental that I was pretty surprised to see it given to be honest...
Anyways, Neal Maupay converted the penalty; and worse was to come when the influential substitute Leandro Trossard found space on the left to send in a dangerous ball that captain Digne inadvertently turned in to his own net. This was another game that Everton really crash & Burn; a true slam Dunk of a defeat...
