A terrible mix-up between Benjamin Mendy & Ilkay Gundogan allowed the in-form Christian Pulisic to stride through and score midway through the first-half. The defending champions were shaken but not stirred; as Kevin de Bruyne executed a breathtaking free-kick ten minutes into the second half to level things up. As Leicester found out a few seasons ago; Chelsea is one of the worst teams to play when you are gunning for the championship; and so it proved again; as Frank Lampard's indefatigable men continued to pour pressure on the City goal in search of the winner.
After Raheem Sterling hit the post for City; two unbelievable goal-line clearances by City served to define this match. The first from Kyle Walker could have been the goal-line save of the century; the second by Fernandinho though; was in fact an illegal handball; red card and penalty. And the script was completed when 'Invisible Man' Willian; touted to leave at the end of the season; scored the decisive penalty to end City resistance and hand Liverpool the title.
