Kingsley Coman put in a Man-Of-The-Match performance to win the UEFA Champions League for Bayern Munich. It was a breathtaking night for the grand finale; with both teams putting on a show and showing the nervousness and drama befitting for such a worthy occasion.
In the end; it was Neymar's tears; David Alaba consoling him at the final whistle; and Manuel Neuer's saves that will be remembered long into the night. PSG had the chances; especially in the first half; and when they missed them all; you just sensed that Bayern the favourites would come back to haunt them; and that's exactly what happened.
Five times they had chances; and the greatest goalkeeper in the world denied them all. First; it was Kylian Mbappe who released his strike partner Neymar; whose left-foot shot was saved by Neuer's legs; but it was the follow-up save from the cross that was truly breath-taking. Ander Herrera; perhaps a surprise inclusion in place of the gifted Marco Verratti; did well to find Angel di Maria and then Mbappe with incisive passes in the penalty area; and both times they finished poorly. And then one of their best players Marquinhos; found himself open with only Neuer to beat; and the German saved brilliantly with his feet again.
Bayern in truth did not have that many chances. Robert Lewandowski hit the post with a nice spin-shot; but it was another surprise inclusion Kingsley Coman who was providing terror down the left flank against Thilo Kehrer. On one such occasion late in the first half; Kehrer seemed to have pulled him down; but in my view that was not a penalty.
What I thought was a penalty; was Joshua Kimmich's inadvertent foul on Mbappe midway thru the second half; but I must say both calls were ultra-tight. At the end of the day; it was another searing move by Bayern that saw Kimmich cross brilliantly for Coman to head home at the far post. The German champions did well to continue the pressure even after taking the lead; rendering PSG unable to summon the mind or spirit to mount a comeback.
