With the recent influx of local shows on Netflix; we decided to pore down memory lane... starting with the 1998 blockbuster Money No Enough...
This was one of the first films to hit the local film industry; inspired by the fledgling new director Jack Neo; along with local comedian extraordinaires Mark Lee & Henry Thia; with cameos from other local actors including Priscilla Mok & Eileen Wee.
I think one of Jack Neo's strengths is his ability to hit the nail on the cultural norms of Singapore; thus attracting a strong local following. In this show; he features on familiar contexts such as spending too much on installments; borrowing (and getting chased) from loan sharks and the desire to achieve the Singapore Dream.
The jokes and quirks are funny enough; with the three main leads able to bring out their comedic best. Not surprisingly; this show was to raise a new era for local films and brought about subsequent shows such as Ah Boys To Men and Just Follow Law.
