United We Fall

Manchester United's already shaky season hit a new low; capitulating in a shocking 1-6 home defeat by an exuberant Tottenham Hotspur; whose ex-United manager Jose Mourinho tried his best to stifle the smiles but ultimately failed; in a quite-shocking piece of United defending.

Oh it all started so well for United inside the first minute; as even before our coffee was ready; Anthony Martial had latched onto Marcus Rashford's clever flick; before felling under the challenge of Davinson Sanchez to win a penalty which Bruno Fernandes converted.

Within another two minutes; a shocking piece of defending from Harry Maguire; who badly miscued his header (twice); also saw him somehow helping to ease Luke Shaw out of the way; allowing Tanguy Ndombele to blast home for the Spurs equaliser.

If that was bad; things got even worse as Maguire again rather clumsily fouled Harry Kane; allowing the Spurs striker to cleverly release the in-form Son Heung-Min to race through & clip home Spurs' second.

And then the fun really started. Anthony Martial; not a happy camper in the best of times; got involved in a rather bizarre & needless altercation with Erik Lamela in the penalty area. Lamela started things off with a forearm shiver; but Martial then rather rashly delivered a slap to Lamela's face; leading to some histrionics & a red card for the French forward.

The game then de-generated into a glorified training exercise; with Spurs patiently stroking the ball around and United unable to do much to stem the tide. Another terrible ball from Eric Bailly into the centre of trouble saw further mayhem & Son passing for Kane to stroke home; before Son himself grabbed one more at the near post as United's defending started to eviscerate before our eyes.

For the second half; Ole Gunnar Solksjaer decided to rest Bruno Fernandes and bring on Scott McTominay & Fred in a damage-limitation exercise; but the damage was not yet finished. Serge Aurier; enjoying a good game and the freedom of the land on the right wing; proceeded to lash home Tottenham's fifth; and eyes were starting to roll big-time when Paul Pogba fouled Ben Davies in the area; for Kane to score a remarkable sixth for Spurs from the penalty spot.
