All Square at the Top

Premiership favourites Manchester City & Liverpool contrived to play out a 1-1 stalemate at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday nite. After a pulsating first half; the match turned rather sterile in the second; with both sides seemingly content to hold out for a precious point.

Liverpool took the lead after Sadio Mane was fouled inside he box by Kyle Walker; leading to Mohamed Salah scoring unerringly from the penalty spot. City though got back on level terms after Liverpool were found guilty of allowing the City right flank too much space. Walker found Kevin De Bruyne unmarked; and the playmaker relayed an inside ball to Gabriel Jesus; who produced a Bergkamp-esque flick to deceive the Liverpool defence and prod home the equaliser.

City in fact had a gilt-edged chance just before half-time to take he lad; after Joseph Gomez was adjudged to have handled De Bruyne's cross in the area; alas; the Belgian somehow put his penalty wide with Alisson beaten.

Jesus had another gilt-edged opportunity to win the game for City in the second half; when he flicked a Joao Cancelo cross wide; but in the end; it was Even Stevens for both championship contenders.
