Doubting Thomas

Big news came up again recently on the sacking of Paris Saint-Germain coach Thomas Tuchel on Christmas Eve. Pardon the pun; but this came out of the blue as there was no sign he was in any danger and PSG are still going rather OK in both domestic & cup competitions.

No doubt they are only third in Ligue Un; which is poor by their standards; but they are only a point behind Lyon & Lille and their form has generally been OK. But it could be that the recent 0-1 home defeat to league leaders Lyon and the goal-less draw away to Lille have taken their toll. In the Champions League; after a rather-nervy start; the team have progressed through to the second round from a tough group involving both Manchester United & RB Leipzig; and in fact look forward to a tantalizing showdown with Barcelona next. Let's not forget; this is one of the most highly-regarded coaches in the world; and he took the team not just to league & cup glory least season; but also the Champions League final where they lost to Bayern Munich.

Me thinks this has as much to do with boardroom disagreements with Brazilian legend Leonardo as more than anything else; with the two not seeing eye-to-eye on more than a few occasions. It is true that PSG have eye-openingly released a lot of solid free transfers in recent days; notably Thiago Silva to Chelsea; the exciting Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to Bayern; the impressive right-back Thomas Meunier to Borussia Dortmund; and of course Edinson Cavani to Manchester United. It is also worth noting the rumours that Tuchel did have some hierarchy problems in his previous post at Dortmund as well.
