Shock To The System

During their triumphant celebration for Shock Wave; star Andy Lau suddenly announced there would be a sequel called Shock Wave 2. It was a symbol of the film's unexpected success; a roaring hit that showcased Lau's new-found acting abilities and impressive repertoire.

This sequel was highly-anticipated; as the original was one of my favourite movies of all-time; but unfortunately; it is more Basic Instinct 2 than The Empire Strikes Back. The exact things that made it such a hit the first time round; the sincerity; clean yet powerful premise and tantalizing thrills; are sadly lacking in this round.

Replacing the honest integrity and sincerity are over-the-top action sequences; loads of CGI as per current trending; and stereo-typical & re-hashed acting. The action scenes tend to be rather exaggerated; and the bland storyline doesn't lend credence to the acting potential of both Andy & Sean Lau. There are some minor thrills involved; but mixed in the convoluted action; they pale in comparison to the stunning original showpiece.
