Simply The Best

I was pleased to see the France Football list of the greatest football players in history. Going with an expansive 3-4-3 formation; I would say most of the choices are correct.

Firstly; you've got to have Pele & Diego Maradona. With 6 and 5 Ballon D'Ors respectively; you've also got to have Lionel Messi & Cristiano Ronaldo. In goal; Lev Yashin probably seems correct; but I guess you could have made a case for Rinat Dasayev; Gordon Banks; Dino Zoff; or maybe even Peter Schmeichel.

At right-back; it would be hard to look beyond Cafu; whose rampaging runs down the right flank are stuff of legend; and who also continues a fine tradition of Brazilian right-backs such as Carlos Alberto; Josimar & Daniel Alves.

At left-back; you cannot look beyond Paolo Maldini; surely the greatest left-back of all-time. In the centre; I would also agree with German Kaiser Franz Beckenbauer; who would edge other luminaries such as AC Milan legend Franco Baresi and Italian World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro.

The only really problem that I have in this line-up is the inclusion of Xavi. No doubt he is a breathtaking player; a superb passer & a Barcelona legend; but I just don't feel he should be in this list. I feel players such as Eusebio; Johan Cruyff and certainly Ruud Gullit should be in his place in central midfield. Gullit; particularly; was the best player of his era; similar to Pele & Maradona.

The other central midfield slot would be a tough fight; but I would agree with Lothar Matthaus; who was a devastating central midfielder. He was the driving force behind that great German team that won the World Cup in 1990 and basically stormed through the competition as favourites. Maybe Michel Platini, Socrates, Zico, Bobby Charlton or George Best could be considered but I think Matthaus takes the cake.

As chief striker; I think you would also have to take the Brazilian Ronaldo; who edges past other legends such as Alfredo di Stefano; Gerd Muller; Ferenc Puskas; Marco van Basten and his fellow compatriot Ronaldinho; who was also considered the greatest player in his era.
