Cold Play

Icelandic legend Gylfi Sigurdsson stroked home a Panenka-style penalty to inspire Everton to an upset 1-0 win over high-flying Chelsea; in front of a raucous crowd of 2,000; as the fans came back to life at Goodison Park.

Everton seemed to feed off the energy of the home crowd; playing with an energy & commitment that was sorely missing in their previous games. And it was their core striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin who epitomised that energy; chasing down his own flick-on to force a calamitous barge from Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to earn a hard-won penalty for his side.

Chelsea had their chances; notably from fledgling right wing-back Reece James who had efforts saved by Jordan Pickford and crack against the post. Mason Mount also had his fair share of chances; seeing a speculative lob go just over; and hitting the post himself with a lovely second-half free-kick that drew the impish smiles of Pickford.

Everton; while short on possession; did have their chances as well; notably through the hardworking Richarlison down the left and Calvert-Lewin up top. In fact; Calvert-Lewin nearly won another penalty near the end after a sharp turn in the box on a break-away; but it was ruled off after a correct offside decision.
