Gunners On Song

Arsenal prepared for their 'match of the season' in the perfect way; coasting past Newcastle United 2-0 at St James' Park in a match they largely controlled. In a turbulent and often-inconsistent season; this was the ideal preparation before taking on their biggest match; trying to overturn a 1-2 deficit against Villareal in the Europa League semi-final second leg.

Their efforts were buoyed by central midfielder Mohamed Elneny's first-ever Premier League goal; as he latched on to an accurate volley just outside the penalty area; and their task was made complete as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang; not in his best form this season; acrobatically finished from Gabriel Martinelli's lovely cross to seal the win.

Newcastle; playing good football of late with some impressive results; played like a team that was safe from relegation; and lacked the imagination and drive to really threaten Mikel Arteta's men. Perhaps their biggest problem was 'super-sub' Joe Willock being unable to play against his parent club.
