Am I dreaming? Suddenly this Everton team seems to make a breakthrough. Where before we would have stuttered and lost this game; now we instead win it; and quite comfortably at that; 2-0 away at the high-flying Seagulls of Brighton & Hove Albion.
When the only blemish of your performance is a primary-school style childish tussle between Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin as to who takes the penalty; you know you're doing good. This match was already going well; end-to-end action of the Premiership calibre; both teams trying their best to score and yet cancel each other out at the same time.
Then we saw the latest installment of Fifty Shades Of Gray; the diminutive winger taking charge with a determined drive and better shot to put the visitors ahead. Brighton; with a perfect record so far this season; never really got going; with their passing play always disrupted by Everton's incessant pressing; and their line-up made worse by the strange insertion of centre-back Adam Webster instead of the speedy Tariq Lamptey at right-back suffering them at both ends of the park./
Joel Veltman; meant to change the course of the game after coming on at half-time; did so but for the opposition instead; bringing down the marauding Seamus Coleman for the fateful penalty that Calvert-Lewin dispatched like a pro. It may be quite early days yet; but Rafael Benitez is looking like he could in fact be the right man for this club; with the team playing at an intensity & energy that we have rarely seen.
