Everton Stay United

Everton's brilliant start to the season under Rafael Benitez continued with a gritty 1-1 draw at championship contenders Manchester United at Old Trafford; themselves coming off a pulsating 2-1 victory over Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League just mere days ago.

The home team may have felt some of those after-effects; as their play was slightly slow and less sharp; exemplified in Anthony Martial & Edinson Cavani missing good header chances in the first half. Just when Everton looked to have made it to the interval level though; a typical piece of brilliance from Bruno Fernandes released Martial; who was slightly fortunate that his deflected drive found its way past Jordan Pickford.

Everton though; are made of sterner stuff these days; and in a lightning counter-attack; two pieces of opportunistic brilliance from both Demarai Gray (shrugging off Fred) and Abdoulaye Doucoure (sweet turn and pass) released Andros Townsend for the former Palace winger to slot home and conjure a Ronaldo-esque 'Siuuu' celebration of his own.

The visitors even shockingly had a chance ot win it; but substitute Tom Davies; looking a tad short on confidence; elected to pass instead of shooting and Yerry Mina was found marginally offside; good dance or not.

In the end, United; and Ronaldo in particular; was left seething at dropping further points in the tight championship chase after losing last time out to Aston Villa; and Everton can look hard and proud at another titanic performance at Old Trafford.
