It has almost been this huge conundrum. How can you top a song that can never be topped? Psy could never do something better than 'Gangnam Style'; a-ha could never do a better song than 'Take On Me' in a million years; and same for Aqua with their irrepressible 'Barbie Girl'? So is it all downhill from there? And some even labelled a one-hit wonder? A first big song leads to a grand opening; but what happens after that?
Avril Lavigne could do much better than her fist hit 'Complicated'; Linkin Park excelled after their breakout hit 'Crawling' and even Duran Duran excelled after their first hit '(Is There) Something I Should Know'. In a similar vein; with the new season of Squid Game underway; it is surely the most-anticipated sequel in history; with people dying to watch it the second it opens. But can it top the original? Will people be saying 'Oh the original is still better..." Will it be a disappointment in that sense? Can the original even be topped in the first place?
So what's the verdict? I say it is good to have an explosive first hit to let the world know who you are... but just be ready that that hit could never be topped...
