For A Song

Singapore has had its fair share of dramatic collapses in football. In recent SEA Games & AFF Suzuki Cups; they have often flattered to deceive. Just recently; in Dec last year; came perhaps the most dramatic of all: a cataclysmic 4-2 loss to Indonesia in the AFF Suzuki Cup semi-final that saw them reduced to 8 men and miss a last-minute penalty amidst a wave of drama.

Well this was almost the greatest victory in the history of Singapore football. After 75 minutes; they were leading at Kyrgyzstan 1-0 in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. Kyrgyzstan were the overwhelming favorites; ranking in the top 100 and having home advantage. But after Song Ui-Young's brilliant breakaway goal; we were on the verge of a miraculous upset.

Well it didn't quite last. Hero Song turned abit villain as he inexplicably barged into substitute Viktor Maier in an unnecessary challenge; thus giving the hosts a penalty that turned the tide of the game. Before long; the Kyrgyzs had seized control of the game; and it was Maier himself who fired home composedly to send the home fans into delight.

It was yet another sickening blow for Singapore football; who had put up a rare dogged & disciplined display to frustrate the attack-minded Kyrgyzs; and despite defeat; they did show a rarely seen composure and freedom of play.
