Everton & Chelsea played out an attritional war on the opening day of the season; with both sides playing an identical 3-4-3 formation that nearly cancelled each other out.
In the end; the match was decided by a rash challenge from Everton's Abdoulaye Doucoure (who had a storming game otherwise) as he bundled over Chelsea's inroading left-back Ben Chilwell to give away a penalty eight minutes into first-half stoppage time.
It was a little unfortunate for Everton; who denied the early-season doomsayers with a committed performance; with Doucoure & Alex Iwobi in the middle of the park showing particular drive & purpose.
For Chelsea; it was not their best performance to begin with; but with new signings Raheem Sterling; Kalidou Koulibaly & Marc Cucurella having impressive debuts; the season can only get better for Thomas Tuchel's men.
