We could scarcely believe our eyes as the newly-promoted team showed absolutely no respect to one of the best teams in the world; biting in to every challenge and pressing them with intensity.
It seemed to un-nerve Liverpool; who were never really able to impose their smooth passing style on the match; and they were uncharacteristically short of creativity and passion in the final third.
The man of the moment was Aleksandar Mitrovic. Once thought of as a peripheral figure in Fulham's early conquests in the Premiership; he came up determined to show things were now different; scoring both goals for Fulham; the first a towering header over Trent Alexander-Arnold; and the second winning the penalty from Virgil van Dijk which he coolly converted.
Liverpool did well to come back twice; and substitute Darwin Nunez impressed again with a clever goal; but overall; they will need to regain the sharpness that they showed in the Community Shield barely a week ago.
