Manager Imanol Alguacil had promised an attacking game from his side; but they actually started rather conservative; delaying play at the back and even gifting possession to United through some errant passes from goalkeeper Alex Remiro. In fact; it was after taking the lead that Sociedad began venturing forward; sensing their opponents were there for the taking.
Cristiano Ronaldo seems to have lost it. Missing several decent chances; getting caught offside on numerous occasions; showing less of the vaunted speed he once had; wasting the free-kick... it was all there for the Portuguese. Casemiro;in his first start for the club; was not too convincing either; giving the ball away at times and not his usual authoritative self.
For Sociedad; it was just the ultimate team performance. They played as compact unit; harrying and pressing the United players; and even when they gave the ball away in dangerous situations; their defensive presence and know-how always ensured they snuffed out the danger. And it is perhaps best highlighted by left-back Aihen Munoz; who provided a sparkling display; and youngster Jon Pacheco; who put up an equally vibrant display. Up front; they were bolstered by Japanese youngster Takefusa Kubo; signed from Real Madrid; and nostalgic veteran David Silva; who produced effervescent displays.
