No Escape From Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz had already played three mind-blowing; epic five-setters against quality opposition in the three prior rounds - Marin Cilic; Jannik Sinner & Frances Tiafoe had already been put to the sword - and he somehow summoned one more superhuman effort to take down fellow up-and-comer Casper Ruud to become the youngest Grand Slam Champion since Lleyton Hewitt and youngest-ever World No. 1.

In an enthralling four-set match that drew luminaries such as Jon Bon Jovi; Anne Hathaway; Devin Booker & Billie Jean King, Alcaraz displayed his all-court game to devastating effect as he took down the considerable talents of Ruud; who at times in the match looked as though he was to be the anointed champion.

When it mattered though; the 19-year-old somehow showed composure beyond his tender years; and channeled his inner Nadal-ism at the right times to power through this gripping contest. Even his serve - something he is not particularly famous for- came up big for him in the latter stages; when he fired repeated aces and seemed to be a John Isner out of nowhere.
