No Hollywood Ending

Wrexham; perhaps the team most in the news these days; nearly produced another miraculous upset; taking the lead twice against the best team in the world Chelsea; before finally falling short after going down to 10 men and fading off in extra time.

In an epic encounter at the Racecourse Ground, Sam Smith (not the singer) raced clear to put Wrexham ahead in the 18th minute; but Chelsea fought back & levelled 5 minutes before half-time; after an unfortunate goal-line clearance from George Thomason ricocheted off his own goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo into their own net.

In the second period; Wrexham found the wherewithal to take the lead again; when Josh Windass; son of the Hull legend Dean Windass; saw his long shot deflect in off Callum Doyle to set the stage for another major upset. Alas they would not hold the lead for long; as defender Josh Acheampong found a way & rocked the ball into the roof to bring Chelsea level again.

The turning point of the contest was arguably the sending-off of George Dobson in the 93rd minute. Wrexham seemed to fade after that; and goals from Alejandro Garnacho & Joao Pedro ensured there would be no fairy tale for Ryan Reynolds' men on this night. Chelsea will look forward to a slightly bigger team in Paris Saint-Germain in midweek; while Wrexham will continue their spirited push toward the Premiership.
