Voices That Care

Just heard Belinda Carlisle's evergreen hit 'Summer Rain' on my car iPod today, and somehow she just struck me as singing that song so perfectly that you can just FEEL the emotion emanating from her. It's as if she is really going through what she is singing in her song. It's such a brilliant song that you can hear it 20 years from now and it'll still be brilliant (as currently proven).

Carlisle actually first made her name as a member of the all-girl rock-band The Go-Go's sometime in the late seventies. They became a huge success and made history by being the first all-girl band to not only write their own songs, but play their own instruments. Apart from lead singer Carlisle, their members are Charlotte Caffey (who worked with Carlisle on background vocals later in Carlisle's solo career), Jand Wiedlin, Kathy Valentine and Gina Schock. In her younger years, Carlisle was so pretty it was almost untrue.

Some other 'breakthrough' songs with notable singing quality include Pet Shop Boys' anthemic hit 'It's A Sin' (sung by Neil Tennant with a superb, crystal-clear voice), Ronan Keating's 'When You Say Nothing At All' (when I first really started taking notice of his smooth voice) and Adele's ubiquitous 'Someone Like You' (one of the best solo performances I've heard in years). There's just something extra in their voices that makes the song really 'come to life'.
