Manchester City are back. Finally, the reigning BPL champions have returned to their form of last season, as they put Chelsea to the sword with a marvelous display of determined, attacking football. Yaya Toure was back to his inspirational best, after having just returned from the African Cup of Nations. City could also count on impressive performances from dependable right-back Pablo Zabaleta and holding midfielder Jack Rodwell, who made a rare start.
After a goal-less first half in which City had the edge, Chelsea surprised all by winning a penalty early in the second half. Demba Ba, looking lively upfront and a more potent threat than Fernando Torres, broke free from a long ball and forced Joe Hart to bring him down. The stage was all set for Frank Lampard to score his 200th Chelsea goal from the spot, but Hart denied him with a quite magnificent save.
Goaded into action, City stepped up a gear and Yaya Toure scored a sublime goal to put City in front. Substitute Carlos Tevez than scored a 20-yard blinder to put the result beyond doubt. The champions thus move within 12 points of league leaders Manchester United. If only they had played like that from the first game of the season.
