Today was the first day of a much-anticipated course for me in MINDEF/SAF - the 06/13 Human Resource Advanced Officer Course (HRAOC) conducted at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Human Resource Institute (HRI). Over these couple of weeks, I will be sharing some key anecdotes of the course, as seen through my eyes....
The first week of the course was conducted at NUS and the first thing I must say is that the facilities provided at the pristine-new Mochtar Riady Building (of NUS Business School) is nothing short of magnificent. The seminar room is professionally-set up, with semi-circular tiered seating and indiviudal name tags provided for each of the 27 participants. The 'goodie set' provided is also good, with sufficient writing materials, supplementary lesson notes/readings, a bevy of reflection resources and even a nice metallic cup to drink your refreshments in.
The first day's lecturer was Mr Lowe Joo Yong, an experienced, friendly professor with a wry sense of humour. Even his direct and unique sense of speaking drew laughs from the appreciative crowd. Some of the key nuggets we took away are:
1) Social Networking's impact on Recruitment Policy. Guidelines for companies are necessary as a form of direction. A core site of course is Facebook, and whether companies should do background checks on that when hiring people.
2) An interesting question: With the obvious distractions, should Internet be cut off from the office? Even though the lecturer seemed to lean as such, I thought differently. I think in today's well-connected world, we should embrace rather than shun the World Wide Web.
3) Another interesting point I took out from today's lesson is the current viewing of a Career as an Experience. With your time at work covering about a third of your life, shouldn't companies now start taking that same conceptual route?
