Come Fly With Me

What a Good Friday it was. I started the day with some nice waffles for breakfast at my home, followed by fetching my girlfriend from her place to the Imperial Palace Nan Bei Restaurant at Takashimaya, to join up with my parents there for lunch.

The dim sum there is superb, and we ended up ordering dish after dish until we were well and truly full. The quality is certainly better than the average Chinese restaurant, with refinement and taste in practically every dish we ordered. The egg congee that I ordered was first-class, with the watery style both appetising and beneficial to the senses.

After that, I bought the McFly and Aerosmith autobiographies from Kinokuniya which had just been released recently, but more about that later. After that, we went back to my girlfriend's place to fetch her Mom to The Bencoolen at Bugis area for some shopping. I could also get my favourite haw flakes over there. We then got bubble tea at Koi as we moved around the Bugis+ area.

We then went back to my girlfriend's place where I had a chance to read 121 pages of the 'McFly: Unsaid Things... Our Story' autobiography, fresh off the burners. And I tell you, what a fantastic book it is. The four members of McFly take turns to tell their part of the story, and they do it with such panache, honesty and humour that it's just enthralling to read. It's the kind of book that you just can't put down. In barely a few hours, I had finished almost half the book (to the amazement of my girlfriend), but I guess I do have a fast reading speed when it comes to books.

The book tells of how the four members of McFly - Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Harry Judd and Dougie Poynter - grew up and managed to get into the band, but it was not an easy ride for any of them. Lead singer Fletcher was originally accepted into the band Busted, but after two days, he was shockingly informed that the band management wanted to cut the band size from four to three members, thus having to leave him out. For Jones, Judd and Poynter, it all came about through gruelling auditions, and in some cases, they had actually missed the boat before their undeniable presence and charm managed to somehow win the affections of the band management, who contrived to give them further miraculous chances.

I just can't wait to finish the book, it's one of those you could finish in a night if I really wanted to. But that would be a bit crazy I guess. I fell in love with the band after their appearance in the movie 'Just My Luck', which was quite a number of years ago when Lindsay Lohan was still sane enough to be the lead actress. Just her luck that she fell off the tracks, I guess. But it was these four guys' appearance at the movie as themselves that really caught my eye. There was just something about their charisma, looks and whole-hearted sincerity and endeavour that made me sit up and take notice. It was such a great and charming movie (one of my favourites) as well and I guess that helped. I've bought the DVD for it as well.

Suffice to say they're one of my favourite bands and I've got 10 of their songs downloaded on my iPod. Of which my favourite is 'The End', a slightly-cryptic, medium-tempo pop song that charms with its earnesty and lyrics. Upon reading the book, I started humming the lyrics of the song and couldn't wait to hear it when I returned home, which was exactly what I did.

For dinner, I went with my girlfriend and her Mom to a zi char place near her home. Again, the food was wonderful and I thoroughly enjoyed it. We had rice with fish, vegetables and a sea cucumber-type dish, and I loved all of it. In fact, my appetite was so buzzing that I had two plates of rice! Walloped every single shred on the table and came away extremely full..... A great end to a great Friday.

Tomorrow, I will be going with my girlfriend and her family to Malaysia for three days. Looking forward to a relaxing time there and to enjoy the lovely road-side food there that you cannot get in Singapore, such as the gon lou mee (black-sauce noodles) that is simply delicious!
