Sensational Spain

To cap off a wonderful FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019, Spain defeated Argentina 95-75 in a slightly unexpected one-sided final. I did predict Spain to win; but Argentina; having defied the odds to overcome a host of more-fancied nations such as Serbia & USA-conquerors France; came up rather flat in this one; probably a bridge too far.

The difference I felt was the performance of the star players: while Ricky Rubio & Marc Gasol came up shining for Spain; Luis Scola and Facundo Campazzo had a disappointing showing for Argentina. Led by former NBA Defensive Player of the Year Gasol; Spain stifled the Argentine offence with swarming, breath-taking defence, altering attempts, covering one another and recording blocked shots to suffocate the Argentina spirit. With great team composure, the Spaniards also showed their experience in game management and repelled a few spirited attempts by the Argentines to get back in it.

I started to really enjoy this Spanish team; their charisma, individual flamboyance and unique blend of technical skill and team spirit that is uniquely Spanish. From the brilliant Player of the Tournament - Phoenix Suns' Rubio; to their NBA champion Toronto Raptors' outstanding Gasol; to their inspiring captain Rudy Hernandez; to the talented Hernangomez brothers Juan & Willy of the Denver Nuggets & Charlotte Hornets respectively to the dynamic back-up point-guard Sergio Llull; there were big stars and big plays all around.

The USA are ready to come back big for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020; but make no mistake, the Spanish will be waiting.
