This was the best Everton performance of the season so far... a thunderous, full-blooded performance busting with vigour and passion... it looked like Everton had 16 players out there today... West Ham; a team on the ascendancy and looking strong this season; just couldn't get anything going as they were stifled time and again by Everton's all-consuming pressing game...
The first goal was probably a finish that only the diminutive Brazilian Bernard could muster; he looked to have taken the wrong option as he cut back when surely a shot looked more ominous; then proceeded to bamboozle all & sundry with another delicious cut-back before somehow squeezing his shot past Roberto Jimenez at his near post...
Everton were truly bossing this and could have gone further goals in-front when the hardworking Richarlison evaded the Hammers back-line to whack against the post; and Theo Walcott, capping probably his best performance in an Everton shirt; crashed a stupendous volley against the crossbar with the 'keeper well-beaten. Along the way, Yerry Mina also headed home an excellently-worked corner routine; but there was somehow adjudged to have been a 'blocking' foul along the way.
Andre Gomes (MOTM for me) was looking imperious in central midfield; controlling the game with his physical presence and silky distribution; and it looks like we have really missed him in the past few games. So too Alex Iwobi; who was flourishing in a rather unusual central attacking midfield role; prodding & probing the whole game... also new boy Djibril Sidibe... who really showed his France World Cup-winning form... settling in seamlessly into the team with an excellent physical performance down the right flank...
And the final Iceland on the cake came when substitute Gylfi Sigurdsson; maybe trying to prove a point after being dropped for this one; came on and in injury time; unleashed a trademark dummy-cum-curling shot that sizzled into the corner... surely a contender for Goal of the Season...
