And so it was with joy that I read his autobiography 'Born To Score'; a fantastic chronological output of his entire life & career; from his humble, sunny beginnings in his native Trinidad & Tobago; to playing for his hometown club & country; and catching the eye of Aston Villa when they came down for a friendly; which was so coincidental it may never have happened.
After establishing himself at Villa; he then caught the eye of the biggest club in the world. Sir Alex Ferguson knew what he wanted and they paid a then-staggering 12.6 million pounds to get their man. In his first season there, Yorke documents the incredible times as they claimed all three trophies in the unforgettable 1998-99 season. After that however; things went on a downhill trajectory and slowly; he found himself not a first-choice anymore at United.
He then moved on to Blackburn; Birmingham City; Sydney FC & Sunderland with varying degrees of success; as he suddenly found himself in 'no-man's land' and a far cry from the past glories. He talks about his deep-found respect for Sir Alex Ferguson; his 'unique' relationship with ex-skipper Roy Keane; and the near career-ending injury at the hands of manager Graeme Souness.
He also covers his life in detail off-the-field; with particular attention on his tumultuous relationship with tabloid sensation Katie Price (Jordan); his estranged relationship with his son; and his incessant love for partying and girls.
It is a fascinating read; and the free-flowing; easy-narrative style of this book makes it all the more appealing. There were times when I just could not put it down.
