Something brilliant happened recently: a whole gamut of Singaporean TV shows and movies have been made available on Netflix; meaning we now get the whole history of Singapore TV on one click of a button.
The grand-daddy of all Singapore shows has to be 'The Awakening'; starring an impossibly young Xiang Yun and leading man Huang Wenyong; and of course featuring that unforgettable scene of the roof boat opening and showing all the workers cramped inside.
Which leads me to wonder: what happened to the golden age of Singapore TV: when stars such as Chen Liping; Chen Xiuhuan and Zoe Tay ruled the day; when shows such as 'Flying Fish'; 'The Unbeatables' and 'Silk & Satin' ruled the roost? It all culminated in the nadir of 'The Golden Pillow'; the biggest show in Singapore ever that even brought in Hong Kong superstar Alex Man alongside local heavyweights Li Nanxing; Zoe Tay and Xie Shaoguang. Things reached another high when long-haired actor Chen Hanwei came on-board with his guitar song; and everyone seemed to be watching local TV; with actors Rayson Tan and Pan Lingling ruling the airwaves.
And we haven't even talked about Channel 5 yet; when the whole Singapore seemed to be watching shows like Moses Lim & Under One Roof; Jamie Yeo & Growing Up; and Gurmit Singh with Phua Chu Kang; and talking about it without fail next day at the office water-cooler. And even brilliant movies such as Mee Pok Man and The Teenage Textbook Movie are now found on Netflix.
So what has happened now; when no one in their right mind would be caught watching Channel 5 & 8? Is it because of social media and Netflix? What has happened to the local stars such that no one even knows them anymore?
