Brighton actually played better overall in this match; and will feel unfortunate not to have gotten anything out of it. They went ahead in the 40th minute after a good passing sequence found young right-back Tariq Lamptey rampaging down the right flank. The recovering Bruno Fernandes was somewhat unfortunate to have run into him inside the box; but a penalty it was; converted superbly by Neal Maupay down the middle.
United did recover well though; with Luke Shaw immediately embarking on a forceful run down the left flank; and being fouled by Trossard. Bruno Fernandes' flighted free-kick was turned back at the back-post by Nemanja Matic; for Lewis Dunk to turn into his own goal under pressure from Harry Maguire.
In the second half; both teams stepped up their game and Brighton almost had another penalty when Aaron Connolly was seemingly pulled down by Paul Pogba. Upon VAR intervention though; the correct decision was given not to award the penalty. United then went ahead after a sublime piece of skill from Marcus Rashford. Released brilliantly by Fernandes out on the left; he turned and faked out Ben White twice; before striking brilliantly with his left foot past Mat Ryan.
It was Brighton who piled on the pressure for the rest of the game; but after some near-misses; it was Solly March who popped up at the back-post to head in the equaliser in the 95th minute from susbstitute Alireza Jahanbakhsh's cross. It was seemingly game over; but there was more drama to come; as a last-ditch corner from Man Utd was headed goal-bound by Harry Maguire; before Maupay inexplicably decided to handball it; giving the final penalty winner to Fernandes to score home.
