Nao Way Back

Early on in this one; it looked like a shocking upset could be on the cards: unheralded Japanese player Nao Hibino was leading 10th seed, former World No. 1 & one of the favourites Garbine Muguruza 4-1 in the first set and seemed to hold all the aces (pun intended). Her quickness and shot-making was proving all sorts of problems for Muguruza; whose shifty stance belied her nervousness and rusty play.

Suddenly though; it seemed a switch flicked and Muguruza finally woke up. Hitting her famed ground-strokes with increasing velocity; she pinned Hibino back and basically started overwhelming her with her sheer power. Hibino did not help matters also by playing too many high 'moon-balls' back; which played into the hands of her Spanish opponent.

In the end; Hibino put up a really worthy showing and showed grit and determination. But in the end; Muguruza was more or less 'in the zone' and managed to finish off the contest 6-4, 6-4.
