Angelique Kerber showed off her renowned counter-punching game to get the better of Ajla Tomljanovic in the US Open first round. After both players showed some understandable signs of rustiness in the early-going; the match was actually quite even; with both sides having their moments. There were some signs of unorthodoxy as well; with Kerber going for her patented 'squatting' posture on her returns; and Tomljanovic favouring an inside-out backhand on her stronger side. In the end though; it was Kerber's consistency and counter-punching effort that paved the way; as she kept almost every shot back in the court to eventually wear out her opponent.
