Rhythm & Blues

Chelsea served notice of their impending surgence; beating Newcastle United in a comprehensive 2-0 victory that took them to the summit of the table.

Newcastle were simply too defensive in this game; offering little threat going forward; and they were further hamstrung by the absences of key players such as Callum Wilson; Jeff Hendrick and Miguel Almiron.

Chelsea played with swagger & verve; controlling possession to a large extent and looking to have spine and confidence throughout the team. They pressed Newcastle well as well; winning back possession constantly to fashion their own penetrative moves.

From a clever set-piece sequence; Mason Mount was afforded room on the right to send over a teasing cross; that enticed Federico Fernandez to turn into his own net; under pressure from Ben Chilwell. Chelsea had further chances to go further in front; but they were surprisingly wasted by the in-form Timo Werner.

The German star though was not perturbed; as his efforts finally paid off in the second half; when he raced clear of the Newcastle defence before feeding Tammy Abraham to score Chelsea's second off the post. Newcastle had a shot from Sean Longstaff ricochet off the crossbar late on; but in the end; it was too little too late as Chelsea held on for a comfortable victory.
