The thing that makes it stand out is its brutal realism; fast-moving story-line and solid acting. The action moves on at a reckless pace; leaving you almost impossible to breathe; but keeping you thrilled nonetheless. It also follows the Korean strategy of leaving each episode at the threshold of something big; thus keeping you keenly-anticipated for the next episode.
Another unique thing is it has different actors for each season while keeping the core female lead; with each actor top of his class and bringing something different to the table. While all must be said to be glorious in their own right; my personal fav is still Series 2/3; where he gave an ultimately tortured performance; leading to his final death.
