Thus it was a seismic shock to the system when they upset Premiership heavyweights Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 with the final kick of the game in an absolute stunner in this vital group-stage match. Spurs needed the win badly; and surely would have expected it. In the end; they got nothing after a calamitous night and are erstwhile ruled out of the competition after the withdrawal of their final match with Rennes.
Spurs actually put out a rather strong team; with superstars Harry Kane; Dele Alli & Davinson Sanchez all in the starting line-up. Even their second-stringers such as Joe Rodon; Tanguy Ndombele & Matt Doherty are also established internationals in their own right. But what we saw was a display devoid of confidence and commitment; and the first-half sending-off of Ryan Sessegnon certainly didn't help matters.
Credit also must go the Slovenian champions; who played with fire & grit; and they will remember this night for eternity. The match looked to be heading for a draw; until the fateful moment when substitute Amadej Marosa cut in off Sanchez and fired home the dramatic winner.
